Canada's Labrador Trough

Canada’s Labrador Trough is a world-class high-purity iron (Fe) ore district and is located in western Labrador and northeastern Québec. Over 60 years of profitable operations have generated in excess of 2 billion tonnes of iron ore from oxide-facies iron formation rocks. This district has significant growth potential in the future due to the high-grade, low-impurity, and spatial extent of this deposit type. High Tide Resources’ early development stage Labrador West Iron Project in the southern Labrador Trough is on the forefront of meeting the increasing demand for iron ore on a national and international platform while using green technology ore processing methods.

The Labrador Trough Advantage

Infrastructure: The southern Labrador Trough, where the Labrador West Iron Project is situated, has four currently operating iron mines and has an extensive history for producing the highest concentrations of iron ore globally combined with very low-cost renewable hydroelectricity. In addition, the region competently hosts all required infrastructure including the operating capacity on a common carrier railway, access to port facilities at Sept Isles (Québec), modern towns, regional/local airport, and skilled local workforce.

Growing Market: The shift towards environmentally-friendly steel production methods (see Technical Section) creates market growth as the demand for electric arc furnace (EAF) steel production rises. The high-quality and low-impurity iron from the southern Labrador Trough is the source essential source for this advanced processing method. The outcome is lowering CO2 emissions by using natural gas or hydrogen instead of coal required for generating direct reduction (DR) iron pellets and utilizing readily available hydroelectricity in the future.

Low Risk: Jurisdictional risks in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, are minimal. Robust mining regulations, efficient permitting processes, environmental standards, and strong relationships with local Indigenous communities provide a low-risk environment. For mine development, geological and technical risks are minimized by established mining practices in adjacent operating mine sites.

Future Leader in Canada’s Critical Minerals Strategy

High-purity iron ore is a designated “critical mineral” by both Canada and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Minerals deemed as “critical” must be 1) considered a national priority and essential to Canada’s economic growth and security; or 2) constitute a major role in the transition to a low-carbon economy; or 3) a sustainable source of highly strategic minerals for allies and partners (Natural Resources Canada, 2024). High Tide Resources looks to contribute to this campaign by fueling the Canadian and global economic demand for high-purity iron.
